terramondi PVC tiles are a popular choice for garages, workshops and industrial areas due to their durability and ease of maintenance. With the onset of the winter season, the risk of tiles coming into contact with water, rain or melting snow increases. Therefore, customers often ask us about the resistance of tiles to these conditions. In this article, we focus on the difference between water resistance and waterproofing. We also describe how the Air-Flow system helps protect terramondi tiles from moisture.
We have designed terramondi PVC tiles to withstand the usual mechanical stresses and various chemical substances. This makes them suitable for use in many environments. With more water and snow to contend with in the winter season, it is important to understand how these factors can affect terramondi PVC tiles and how to ensure their long-term functionality and aesthetics
Water resistance versus waterproofness
Terramondi tiles are waterproof, i.e. they resist the penetration of water to a certain degree. Water resistance refers to the ability of the material to resist water and prevent water from penetrating through the surface. On the other hand, waterproofness is an absolute term that refers to the fact that water cannot get through the material under any circumstances. In practice, this means that although terramondi PVC tiles can effectively resist water on their surface, they are not completely impermeable. In certain situations, water can penetrate through the joints between the tiles.
Air-Flow system
Despite the high impermeability of terramondi tile joints, water can still get under the tiles. This is where the Air-Flow system, which is integrated into the underside of the tiles, comes into play. The Air-Flow system consists of so-called drainage channels that allow liquids to drain away and support the evaporation and ventilation process. This enables faster drying under the tiles and minimizes the risk of moisture accumulation and subsequent damage to the floor. All tiles in our TM Mechanic range include this system.
Maintenance of terramondi PVC tiles in contact with liquids
If large quantities of liquids get onto the surface of terramondi tiles, for example due to a spilled drink, a dripping car or melted snow, the liquids can be easily removed. For this purpose, a floor squeegee or other suitable tools can be used to collect and remove water, for example.
Recommendations for environments with high humidity
If the substrate is already damp, e.g. due to a soaked floor or other structural problems, we do not recommend laying terramondi PVC tiles. In such cases, first deal with the source of moisture and ensure that the substrate is dry and stable before laying the tiles.
terramondi PVC tiles offer a durable and practical flooring solution in many environments. Their waterproof properties combined with the innovative Air-Flow system ensure that the tiles effectively protect the floor and remain functional even when in contact with water or snow. However, if there is persistent moisture from the subfloor, it is important to ensure that this condition is rectified before laying the tiles to avoid potential moisture problems in the future.
